Concussion Recognition Training

 

MN Concussion Law Announcement

Minnesota Legislature's New "Concussion Law" Requires Online Training for All Coaches and Officials and Concussion Education for all Parents and Athletes Starting this Fall

The Minnesota Legislature recently passed a "Concussion Law" which requires any municipality, business, school district or nonprofit organization that organizes a youth athletic activity and charges a fee to follow the statute's requirements, including implementing concussion training and education to improve player safety and establish safe return-to-play policies for athletes who sustain a concussion.

The law mandates that:

  • All coaches (head and assistants) and officials receive concussion training and education. This must be renewed every 3 years.
  • Coaches must remove an athlete from activity if they exhibit signs, symptoms or behaviors consistent with a concussion and/or are suspected of sustaining a concussion.
  • The law also requires a doctor's signature to return to play if an athlete is removed due to a concussion or is showing signs or symptoms of a concussion.

The Concussion Education we recommend for coaches and officials is the online video training session developed by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the National Federation of State High Schools. This course requires registration but is free. Over 200,000 coaches and officials have already successfully completed this course. The training process involves watching a video and then successfully completing a quiz. The entire training module can be completed in a little over a half an hour and then participants can print out a certificate on their desktop or print and scan the certificate to create a digital file.

Coaches Team Registration

Coaches will be required to complete Minnesota Hockey’s new online screening.  Once you have completed your USA Hockey registration and the online screening, please forward both confirmation pages, along with the Consent to Treat  and the Coaching Registration Form  to Heidi Keller by leaving in the mailbox at the rink. 

Calling all Coaches

Now accepting application for the 2011 - 2012 Hockey Season.  Please complete the following application.  Applications should be completed and returned to Jeff Ammann at jgammann@comcast.net or 1242 128th Circle NW Coon Rapids, MN 55448.  Returning coaches will not be interviewed, but should still complete an application.

Coaching Clinics

Coaching certification clinics are now starting to be posted on the USA hockey website, www.usahockey.com.   The following are the levels and what the certification is needed:  

  • Level 1 - Mite, 8 & Under.
  • Level 2 - Squirt, 10 & Under.
  • Level 3 - Pee Wee, Bantam, Jr. Gold, 12 & Under, 14 & Under, 16 & Under, 19 &Under.
  • Level 4 - Junior B (check with your local league).

Additionally the following is when the certifications expire and what levels need to be taken:

If you are a Level 1 coach you must take the Level 2 coach course to be recertified and if you are a level 2 coach you must take Level 3 BEFORE the expiration date to remain a current coach.

If you are a Level 3 coach, you must attend another Level 3 clinic, move up and attend a Level 4 clinic, or complete the online recertification program through FlexxCoach BEFORE the expiration date to remain a current coach.  USA Hockey highly recommends completing the online course. Click on this FlexxCoach information link for more information.
